When it comes to How To Install WordPress Blog on your website, you should have paid domain and hosting. It is true, you can have free hosting too, but I would not recommend you that because you will be limited in your work.
When you start looking for hosting provider… Be careful that this provider offers you PHP and MySQL support.
Because you will not be able to install WordPress if they do not have that.
How To Install WordPress Blog Using FTP Program?
The first step is to download the newest version of WordPress on your computer. Go to the official WordPress site and download .zip file with newest WordPress. After you downloaded this –zip file it is time to unpack this file.
Next step is to upload all files on the server. You can do that using one of FTP programs.
There are lots of free FTP programs on the internet. I would recommend you to use File Zilla FTP program which I personally also use.
Let’s repeat, we will upload all unpacked files on the server using the FileZilla program. It is necessary to create another folder on your hard disk. You will name it as you want. For example, “My site”, or similar.
Everything you have in this folder upload in a file public.html. While you are waiting for the upload to be finished, do not waste your time. Go to the next step.
Go to your cPanel and click on MySQL Database, and then on „Create New Database“. Now, everything you have in this folder, upload again in public.html. file.
Write the name of your base (you can write just word “base”) and click on „Create Database“. Next step is to create a username and password.
After you choose a username and password, you need to add it to your base and that’s it.
Exit your cPanel and try to type your web address (domain name) of your blog in the internet browser. For example www.mydomain.com. There will appear a message on your screen.
Click on button „Create a Configuration File“ and then click on „Let’s go!“
Next thing to do is to fill forms with data about base we just created. Click on button „Submit“. There will be another window…
Click on the button „Create a Configuration File“, and you will see one more window:
Fill this data and click on „Install WordPress“, button. If you manage to do that correctly, there will be another message:
Type your username and password and click on „Log In“, button. WordPress is now successfully installed. You are free to start adding and editing your blog’s content.
IMPORTANT: Do not forget to copy, save and remember your username and password. As well as all other data you wrote while you were creating a base.
All that data you will receive on your email from your hosting provider. Save that at some safe place!
What to do after installation?
We are going further with How To Install WordPress Blog lesson.
The first step after successful installation is to change your password. Go to “Users”, choose “edit my profile”, go down on this page a little bit and change your password.
After that, it would be great to install WordPress Plugin named Akismet.
Akismet is a plugin which will help you to control spam and comments on your blog. It is one of the greatest blogging benefits.
You probably noticed that there are various comments that have no relation to your posts. They only impair your visual identity.
You can activate Akismet if you go to your Plugins in the choice menu, and press button “Activate”. But this is not enough to activate Akismet. You will need an API key.
API Key you will get on your email after you create wordpress.com account. Do not share your API key because you will use him same as password.
How to set up settings?
WordPress is really easy and simple to set up. Let’s start with general settings. Click on “Settings” and then “General”. Fill all empty space and proceed to the next step.
- Writing – choose a size of post frame, do you want to show smilies, the category of post and similar.
- Reading – choose what you want to have on your homepage – newest posts or static pages, how many posts you want there.
- Discussion – editing of comments settings. As an administrator, you have the opportunity to allow or deny every comment you get on your blog and much more.
- Privacy – here you will want to choose the first option, for sure – to allow search engines to index your website.
- Permalinks – structure settings of links of articles you are publishing.
I suggest this structure:
Post name http://www.my domain.com/sample-post/
- Adding new post – go to “posts” tab and choose “add new post”.
Type the title of your article and write the text right below title – in the post area.
When you are done with that, click on “Publish” button if you want to publish your post immediately. Or click on “Edit” button if you want to set the exact time and date when you want to publish your post.
Before you publish, make sure how your post will look like by hitting the preview button.
- Adding categories – go to “Posts” tab again and choose “Categories” in your choice menu. You will see that window:
In that field, write name and description of the category and click „Add New Category” tab.
After I explained to you how to install and start using WordPress… It would be great to explain to you how you will update WordPress to the newest version.
Do not miss that, no matter what – do updates regularly. Before you make updates, you need to do few things:
Create a backup of all your files and databases! Turn off all your Plugins!
It is not necessary, but I highly suggest you to do that. You could have problems if some of your Plugins are not compatible with the newest version of WordPress.
If you made some changes, after the update, those changes will be lost. If you still want to use these changes, make changes in new data or think about using plugins.
First, I will explain to you how to do an automatic update, and then, how to do a manual update.
The first step is to check on your dashboard is there a new version available. If it is available, it will be enough to click on the banner to start the update.
Next step is to click on “Update automatically” button. And that’s it. WordPress will start automatic update which can take some time.
Not too long – few minutes the most. It is important not to do anything on the site while the update is in progress.
After the update is finished, you can continue to do everything you want on your site, turn on your plugins and so on.
If for any reason, an automatic update does not work, you can update your WordPress manually. Download and unpack WordPress installation package.
Delete your old wp-admin and wp-includes directories using FTP program. Then, copy new WordPress wp-admin and wp-includes directories and all other files on the server. Except wp-content directory.
Wp-content directory needs your full attention because there are plugins, themes, and directories in it.
Thus, you need to copy the content of this new wp-content directory in the previous (old) wp-content directory.
After you are done with copying all the necessary data, go to this site:
http://example.com/wp-admin/upgrade.php and follow the steps on your screen.
Your update should be finished now. Congratulations!
I believe this post will help you a lot if you ever wondered How To Install WordPress Blog.
